Are you a member of a trade union but not a member of the Labour Party? Well rather than automatically having a say in the direction of the Party in areas such as the vote for the Leader, you will now need to sign-up individually and become a "Trade Union Affiliate Supporter".
It's totally free as the GMB Union is affiliated to the Party and means the voices of the 6 million people trade unions represent will be heard loud and clear in our Party. GMB has accused Kier of blacklisting agency workers who have been stopped from working on Kier Street Scene Services contract in Corby because they raised a protective disclosure through the grievance process for unlawful deductions of wages and parity pay. This has happened as there is a further hearing in the High Court in London on 14 July seeking compensation for GMB members blacklisted by construction employers including Kier. GMB Northants Community Branch are delighted to be helping a local community project in Corby called The Oakley Vale Rangers a group of young people learning to play musical instruments based at Oakley Vale community centre in Corby In the picture above is Branch Secretary of GMB Northants Gordon Glassford presenting a cheque to Paul Balmer Chair of the Oakley Vale Rangers
The Oakley Rangers takes a positive approach to community building through the energy and excitement of young people. Each Saturday for the last eight years the young people have made ‘Rockschool’ music with FREE guidance from qualified teachers; Paul Balmer and Cllr Judy Caine. The young people ‘payback’ to the community by monthly litter picks and seasonal tree planting in their local area. Paul Balmer chair of the Oakley Vale Rangers has been made ‘BBC Music Day 2015’ ‘Unsung Hero’ – for leading this project . The project is funded by Oakley Vale Community Association and donations like this from GMB Northants. PDF version for printing and download here I along with most trade unionists feel very disappointed with the election result, especially in Corby and East Northants where the electorate in their ‘wisdom’ have elected a right wing Tory and not Andy Sawford, the labour candidate and former MP who has represented the constituency since the bye election in 2012. Andy had been an excellent MP and had worked hard for all his constituents. There must be many who didn’t vote or voted UKIP who will be regretting their actions now. With the exception of Corby Borough Council Northamptonshire is now a sea of blue. Dedicated to the better off few with no consideration to the needs of the many.
Overall we now face five years of attacks on the poor, benefit cuts, slashes in local government funding, more food banks and the further privatisation of the NHS and education. At the same time right wing Tory MPs, with the aid of the press, will be working towards our exit from Europe. All this will fall into the hands of the SNP like manna from heaven. They will be able to claim, quite rightly, that Westminster no longer represents the interests of the people of Scotland and the breakup of the UK will be very real possibility. On top of this of course will be the effect on our members who face ever worsening conditions at work. We can expect the continuing use of agencies and more and more people working on zero hours contracts while being barely able to rent a home never mind buy a house. All the while the rich can look forward to more tax cuts while they continue to live off the fat of the land. We at the GMB will continue to represent the interests of our members but it’s going to be a long, hard five years.
